TIM & CAROLINE

Tim & Caroline

Tim Trench was born in Kenya in 1967, into a well-known British settler family - Tim’s great grandfather Maxwell sailed from Jamaica at the turn of the 20th century to be amongst the first settlers to colonise the East African region.

Tim grew up in Kericho, in the tea growing western highlands of Kenya, and was educated from an early age in England. Three times a year Tim flew home to spend school holidays in Kenya, where he developed an understanding of Africa and a passion for safari and the wilderness.

On graduating with an Honours Degree Tim entered the sports, hospitality & tourism industry. Notable chapters in his life prior to setting up Tim Trench Safaris were:

  • Managing the world-renowned Chewton Glen Health Club in the UK.
  • Coach to Penny Way, 5 times world Windsurfing Champion.
  • Managing Kongoni Wildlife Conservancy – Naivasha, Kenya.
  • Managing Blue Safari Club, an exclusive barefoot luxury lodge in Lamu, Kenya.
  • In 1997 Tim set up his own safari company, with an emphasis on privately guided, tailor-made safaris. As well as his extensive knowledge of Kenya’s flora and fauna, one of the key aspects of the venture was to capitalise on his intimate knowledge of the country. Safari has always been Tim’s hobby as well as his profession, and it was evident that there was a gaping hole in the market for the genuine personal touch - the aim was to offer an experience where guests felt as though they were friends visiting rather than just clients.

In 2001 Tim discovered two new loves – Caroline Wignall and wildlife photography.

Caroline, former international skier and owner of a tutoring company in Whistler, British Columbia moved to Kenya shortly after they met, and soon became the driving force behind the safari business. Caroline & Tim were married onboard a Swahili sailing dhow off the Kenya coast in March 2005.

Wildlife photography has not been so easy, and while Tim has become an accomplished photographer and enjoys teaching those who are interested, he admits there is still a great deal to learn.

No dogs or children means that out of the safari season Tim and Caroline split their time between exploring bits of Africa they have not yet seen, and their little "bolthole" in Whistler, BC.
