Tim was born in Kenya in 1967, into a well-known British settler family - Tim’s great grandfather Maxwell sailed from Jamaica at the turn of the 20th century to be amongst the first settlers to colonise the East African region. Tim grew up in the tea growing western highlands of Kenya. Alhough he was educated from an early age in England he spent all his school holidays in Kenya, where he developed an understanding of Africa and a passion for safari and the wilderness. On graduating with an Honours Degree Tim spent 5 years working in the sports industry in England, before “retiring” and returning to Kenya in 1995 to pursue his safari interests. After a couple of years working for others, in 1997 Tim set up his own safari company, with an emphasis on privately guided, tailor-made safaris. As well as his extensive knowledge of Kenya’s flora and fauna, one of the key aspects of the venture was to capitalise on his intimate knowledge of the country. Safari has always been Tim’s hobby as well as his profession, and it was evident that there was a gaping hole in the market for the genuine personal touch - the aim was to offer an experience where guests felt as though they were friends visiting rather than just clients. In 2001 Tim discovered two new loves – wildlife photography, and Caroline. Caroline moved to Kenya from Western Canada shortly after they met, and soon became the driving force behind the safari business. Caroline & Tim were married onboard a Swahili sailing dhow off the Kenya coast in March 2005. On the 4th November 2007, while in UK, in transit from Kenya to Canada, they were joined by baby Oliver, a little earlier than expected, but perfect. Wildlife photography has not been so easy, and while Tim has become an accomplished photographer and enjoys teaching those who are interested, he admits there is still a great deal to learn. |
