SAFARI SNAPSHOT (No 8)

White Rhino

This young White Rhino, perhaps a year old, was wallowing in a small and extremely muddy pool, along with 2 adults, when we discovered them. Soon after our arrival, two other adults began gently sparring, horn to horn, beside the muddy pool. This was all the encouragement the youngster needed; he began rolling around in the mud, pushing and shoving his companions, and generally having a great time. Soon he had the entire group out of the water, bouncing up and down and charging around like overgrown puppies. Very un-rhino like!

White Rhino calves are born after a gestation of 16 months. They begin grazing after about 2 months, but stay with their mothers for a further 2 - 3 years.
