SAFARI SNAPSHOT (No 2)

Elephant

Once or twice a year I am fortunate to guide a safari in Southern Africa. This shot was taken in Savuti, in Northern Botswana in September 2005. This bull elephant was strolling through the dry kalahari woodland, heading for a drink in the contrastingly lush, green Linyanti swamp. Elephants blow dust on to their bodies to keep themselves cool, to discourage parasites, or as seemed the case here, as an absent-minded habit.
