SAFARI SNAPSHOT (No 13)

Pokot Women

While visiting Mugie Mutamaiyu recently we were fortunate to visit the extraordinary Pokot people. This has not been possible recently, as they have been "at war" with neighbouring tribes, but all now seems to have settled down! This is an extremely remote area, and the people remain little changed by the modern world; it was interesting to reflect that there were children in the village that had not seen "white" people before!

For the pastoral Pokot, their relationship to their cattle is similar to worship; every man should possess an ox, or "Kmar", which has one horn curving forwards, and one curving back. This is his special companion animal, and when going in to battle he will bellow its name. In practical terms their cattle provide them with blood and milk, and their smaller stock such as goats, provide them occasional meat.
