SAFARI SNAPSHOT (No 11)

Grevy's Zebra

The Grevy's Zebra, also known as the Imperial Zebra, is the largest and most distinctive species of zebra, and is the largest wild member of the horse family. It has a big head, large "Mickey Mouse" ears, and its coat sports dazzling narrow stripes that are bisected by a thick black stripe running down the spine. These stripes are unique to each zebra and are as distinctive as fingerprints. This beautiful creature, only found in the horn of Africa, is endangered, and should you wish to see some of the remaining 5000 left in the wild, then the north of Kenya is your only reasonable option.

Though this zebra is named after President Grevy of France, who received the first specimens known to science from the Emperor of Abyssinia in the 1880's, it is believed that this zebra was the famed "hippotigris" (horse-tiger) of the Roman circus.

Grevy's Zebra has adapted well to its desert-like habitat and seems able to withstand extremes of both heat and thirst. It can survive for several days without eating or drinking.
