LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK

Rhino & Zebras

Lake Nakuru National Park is, in our opinion at least, a totally underappreciated safari destination. It is reminiscent of the world famous Ngorongoro Crater, but spectacular crater walls aside, it totally outclasses its more famous rival.

Lake Nakuru was created as a national park to protect the stunning flocks of flamingo, which at times can literally turn its shores pink. The park spans an beautiful range of wooded and bush grassland around the soda lake, which offers a wide ecological diversity, from lake to woodland to rocky escarpments and ridges, and the wildlife has taken full advantage! As well as the massed spectacle of flamingos and a myriad of other water birds, there is an extraordinary population of black and white rhino, tree climbing lions, tremendous leopard sightings, large herds of zebra, impala and eland, and more cape buffalo than you can imagine. This park is truly a stunning experience, and a photographer's paradise.

Lodges in Nakuru are poor, and not really an option for us - but it really is the wonderful place for a Luxury Mobile Camp, with huge yellow thorn acacias shading green lawns manicured and fertilised by passing buffalo and other plains game. We camp here in private sites, far from other visitors, and in areas so rich with game that it is often unnecessary to go on a game drive. Evenings around the fire, with the constellations sparkling above and owls hooting in the surrounding bush will be as memorable as anything on your safari, and this is an idyllic place to relax and immerse yourselves in the spirit of Africa.
