BOTSWANA

Botswana

Over the years many of our guests have returned again and again on safari with us, and part way through the safari the conversation inevitably turns to "so where are you taking us next…"

In a no doubt fruitless attempt to satisfy this unquenchable thirst many people have for Africa, in the year 2000 Tim began guiding safaris to other parts of Africa – and in particular to Botswana.

Botswana perfectly complements Kenya, and for some we even include both countries in a grand safari of a lifetime. While Botswana cannot compare to Kenya in terms of variety of topography, ecosystem, wildlife or culture, it certainly has a couple of proverbial aces up its sleeve - The Okavango Delta, the Linyanti, and the near by Victoria Falls (just across the border in Zambia).

For Africa lovers these really are must experience places, and for Tim it is a tremendous pleasure to spend a few safaris every year guiding groups through this watery wilderness where the Okavango River is swallowed up by the great Kalahari sands.

The Okavango Delta is one of Africa’s most unusual wildlife and wilderness areas. What makes the Okavango most remarkable is that it is a wetland paradise located within the arid Kalahari sands. Every year floodwater flows into the Okavango from its source in the moist central African highlands over 1000 km away, creating a unique and beautiful paradise that sustains a huge diversity of wildlife. As the majority of the Okavango is divided into large private reserves, visitors can enjoy massive tracts of pristine land while seeing no one else other than those staying in their small camp with them. Throughout these areas are a number of very small, personal, luxury tented camps of the highest standard. Varied activities are available in the Delta – safaris by boat and dugout canoe (mokoro) are the best way to see the water areas, while game drives and night drives are best for areas between and around the main channels. Walks and hides offer the visitor a chance to feel very close to nature, though at times you don’t need to do more than look out of the window of your luxury tent to see elephants drifting through the reeds not far away!

In my opinion, the perfect itinerary for a visit to Botswana is to stay in both a "land" camp and a "water" camp in the Delta, and then to stay a few nights in the wildlife rich Linyanti Wildlife Reserve to the northeast of the Delta before crossing the border into Zambia to end the safari at the legendary Victoria Falls.
